PHOTOGRAPHY
I’m a motivated amateur
Photography is something I love, it’s something I do for fun. At one time I thought photography was something I wanted to do for money, but I couldn’t see a way to do that and keep the fresh perspective and experimentation that I enjoyed.
It started for me with travelling, when away in some city by myself it was how I gave myself permission to explore, to take random turns in the road and to move through the city without any direction in mind.
I love cities
Cities are amazing, new scenes around every corner, strange goings on and absurd juxtapositions. I take a camera, maybe two, maybe digital, maybe film or maybe just my M10 Monochrom and walk out the door with no plan on where I am going. These are always the experiences I enjoy the most, with a smart phone it’s impossible to get lost, with Uber it’s impossible to get stranded.
I don’t want to be constrained
I hate the thought of having a particular type of photo I have to take because I have sold a persona to an audience. This probably means I can’t get famous or rich from photography, but it does mean I can take photos of Icebergs in Greenland, take a medium format film camera to Berlin and shoot pictures while I am flying — searching for a new technique or setting for pictures.
I want something more than just instagram
Posting to Instagram and feeding off the likes is an ultimately unsatisfying drug. I am an outsider to photography but I would love to make more connections and show more of my work.
